Provocative Therapy (PT) is a form of very brief client-centred counseling that uses humour as a therapeutic tool. Dr Kaplan has long been interested in the health benefits of laughter and comedy and considers Provocative Therapy to be the cutting edge of the use of humour in the clinic. He is the current president of BIPT (The British Institute of Provocative Therapy).

Sessions of Provocative Therapy are warm, caring, light-hearted and often great fun Clients are not expected to ‘book in’ for more than one session at a time, although a course of 4 sessions can be particularly useful, and involves the additional benefit of the use of recording the sessions on audio and videotape. The tapes are then given to the client to watch at home. Listening to an audiotape of watching yourself on television can be very useful. As the poet Robby Burns mused:

O, wad some power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us,
An’ foolish notion.

Yes, it’s Scottish! wad (would), giftie (Supreme Being?) oursels (ourselves), ithers (others), frae (free), monie (many)

Patients have reported such benefits of watching videos of PT sessions that I’ve begun to think video is probably an excellent aid to most counseling sessions!
